Weekday and Weekend Walks, and Weekend Coach Outings

Gibraltar Point NNR 2017
Weekend away

Date: Friday 6 October 2017 07:00 to Monday 09 October 2017 18:00

Details:

We all left from various parts of the country for the annual visit. Some went direct, some went to RSPB Frampton Marshes and saw waders and raptors and some just met up for lunch at Freiston.

Those who stopped for lunch then went on to RSPB Freiston Shore where they saw tree sparrows, goldfinches and house sparrows. There were plenty of ducks about but very few waders.

We all met up for the Friday evening meal at the hotel.

On Saturday after breakfast, we made our way down to Gibraltar Point. Splitting up into small groups, some went to the coast and others went to the hides. The group that went to the coast saw large flocks of knots (totalling about 35,000 - 40,000 birds) and also whooper swans, common scoter, velvet scoter, gannets and in the distance, a merlin and the usual gulls.

Lunch was taken at the Gibraltar Point cafe and while there we saw stonechats. After lunch we went round the wood but it was very windy and we did not see much.

Later on we went to the hides where we saw greenshanks, avocets and small flocks of dunlins. Last year we saw redwings, fieldfares and ring ouzels, but not this year.

We returned to the hotel when it rained later in the afternoon.

On Sunday six people left the group and one joined. The reconstituted group went back to Gibraltar Point where it was less windy. As we walked round we saw whinchat and a Mandarin duck. An assistant warden said that a yellow-browed warbler had been seen near the ringing station, so we headed that way. Luck was on our side as most of us saw it, if only briefly.

Some saw a pied flycatcher on the way back to their car, others had good views of a kingfisher and of a short-eared owl.

Monday morning we all left the hotel, some went back to Gibraltar Point and the rest went to Frampton where we saw curlew sandpiper, sanderling, dunlin and little stint.

The total number of species seen at Gibraltar Point was 97 which is about average. There were 40 species seen at Freiston Shore and 59 at Frampton. A grand total of 107 species was seen which was good for a three day trip.
