Weekday and Weekend Walks, and Weekend Coach Outings

to Gibraltar Point NNR

Date: Friday 6 October 2017 07:00 to Monday 09 October 2017 18:00

Gibraltar Point
Tennyson's Sands, part of Gibraltar Point NNR

Join us for our annual long-weekend away at Gibraltar Point. On Friday, we travel independently to our hotel. Many of us visit RSPB Frampton Marsh in the morning, have lunch at the Castle pub Freiston around 1pm, then pass the afternoon at RSPB Freiston Shore.

As the sky darkens, we head to the Crown Hotel in time to check-in and freshen-up before our evening meal around 6pm.

On Saturday and Sunday we have full cooked breakfast at 8am and multi-course evening meal at 6pm. During the day we are free to wander as we please, enjoying the nature reserve in small groups.

Habitats at the NNR include saltmarsh, beach (with seawatching), sand dunes, lagoons and ponds, grassland and woodland. A bird observatory allows bird ringers to be seen in action and to tell us what birds are around the reserve. Most paths are level and well surfaced but can be muddy. We visit in autumn as the area is a migration hot-spot.

In the evenings we congregate in the hotel bar to discuss the day and for drinks, coffees and even hot chocolate.

Monday sees us going our separate ways after breakfast. During the whole long-weekend, we expect to note around 100 species.

Crown Hotel at dawn

Our hotel is The Crown Hotel, Drummond Road, Skegness PE25 3AB, which is just north of the golf course, 2.5 miles from the main reserve car park. All rooms are non-smoking, have en-suite facilities, Freeview TV, telephone, hairdrier and tea/coffee making facilities. Free wi-fi in public areas. There is ample parking at the hotel. Meals are served in our private dining room. If you fancy a walk before breakfast, the hotel is a 250 yard walk from the North Sea salt marsh; you might watch a flock of Knot as the sun rises.

The facilities at Gibraltar Point NNR were destroyed by the floods of December 2013. The new visitor centre with rooftop viewing deck and café has now opened. Parking at the NNR is £3 per day. Car park is at PE24 4SU. OS TF556580 Lat/Long 53.0972, 0.3226

The hotel cost will be £70.00 per night for a single room, £100 per night for a twin room. Price includes accommodation, breakfast and evening meal. Payable on arrival. If you would prefer a shorter stay, this is possible for the same daily rate. Packed lunches are available at £5 extra per day.
