Map of Moor Green Lakes Nature Reserve

Three former gravel pits were restored in 1993 with islands and scrapes to create the Moor Green Lakes Nature Reserve. More recent gravel workings to the west are being added to the reserve. There are ash, willow, maple and hazel trees, scrub and grassland. The river Blackwater runs along the southern edge of the site.

Bird feeders in the free car park but no toilets or food. Two hides, two screens. A walk of up to four miles on footpaths, no steep slopes, mud probable.

Regular visitors include Canada, greylag, barnacle and Egyptian geese, wigeon, pochard, gadwall, teal, goosander, shoveler, goldeneye, tufted duck, coot, grebes, gulls, thrushes, nuthatch, reed bunting, stonechat, linnet, meadow pipit, finches and siskin. The barn owl can sometimes be seen in its box. Rarer are bittern, smew, little egret, snipe, water rail, green sandpiper, kingfisher, redpoll, goldcrest and brambling. Expect around 40 species.
