Aston Rowant map

Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve lies on the northern edge of the Chilterns, with views across the Vale of Oxford. It is one of the best places in England for watching Red Kites. Mainly grazed chalk grassland, plus some scrub, and Beech woodland. The reserve is bisected by the M40 - we will be looking at the southern portion. We will also visit Cowleaze Wood, famous for its bluebells, wood anemone and celandine. No facilities.

  • Expect red kite, buzzard, red-legged partridge, pheasant, bullfinch
  • Good chances of marsh tit, coal tit, long-tailed tit, goldcrest, nuthatch.
  • Fifty-fifty for ring ouzel, wheatear, firecrest, linnet, treecreeper, blackcap, song thrush, skylark
  • Possibly - crossbill, whitethroat, mistle thrush, redpoll, grey partridge, yellowhammer.

Keep your eyes open for yellow meadow ant, lambs, deer, hare and rabbit.

Free car park. No facilities. Walk of less than three miles, long gentle slopes on unpaved paths.

After our visit to the reserve, you might be interested in Chris's Motel/Cafe, Wycombe Road, Studley Green, HP14 3XB. You can have a transport cafe lunch and then at around 1:30 - 2pm, watch the red kite feed. Expect up to 100 kites in the cafe car park. The cafe is only five miles from Cowleaze Wood car park.
