On a lovely day 19 people travelled to Somerset for the weekend. We met up for lunch at the Ring O’ Bells in Ashcott where we had a nice meal.

We then set off to the RSPB's Ham Wall NNR for the afternoon where we saw raven soon after arrival. Going on further we visited four more hides/screens and saw great white egret, marsh harrier and various warblers before going to our hotel in Glastonbury.

On the Saturday morning we had breakfast and then went to the Hawk and Owl Trust site at Shapwick Moor NNR where we did see swallows, sedge warbler, reed warbler, bittern and lesser redpoll. We did not see any owls but saw buzzard and sparrowhawks. When we left the reserve it started to rain so we found a cafe for lunch.

After lunch we decided to go to Somerset Wildlife Trust's Westhay Moor NNR and went into three hides but without seeing much except one sparrowhawk which flew over and two moorhens having a boxing match until a larger coot decided he was boss and the moorhens flew off.

We did hear several smaller warblers but they were difficult to identify as they were flying about in the reeds.

We then moved on to the Natural England's Shapwick Heath NNR . There is a tower hide and some of the group had good views of bittern amongst the reedbed. On the opposite side there was more open water and we had good views of shoveler, gadwall, mallard, tufted duck and teal but the best sighting was of three garganey (two males & a female).

Also at the same site we had very good views of the great white egret. Very few waders were seen except one green sandpiper which flew over the tower hide and some lapwings.

We then returned to our hotel for dinner.

After Sunday morning breakfast some stayed in Somerset and some travelled home after a good weekend away.

Not everybody followed the schedule above; splinter groups also visited the RSPB's Greylake NR, Somerset Wildlife Trust's Catcott Complex Nature Reserves and WWT's new Steart Marshes working wetlands.

Most people had not been to the Avalon Marshes area before.
