Rutland Water Nature reserve 2018
Saturday COACH trip

Date: Saturday 5 May 2018 at 07:00

View over Rutland Water from Snipe Hide

Rutland Water Nature Reserve is both a RAMSAR site and an SSSI. The reserve of 1000 acres is along nine miles of shore line and shallow lagoons. Thirty-six hides, four major trails and two visitor centres mean that a day's visit will seem too short.

Famous for its ospreys, there should be several breeding pairs to be seen fishing over the reservoir. For more information about the Rutland Osprey Project, click here

The Water Vole Project has been releasing water voles here since 2011. Look for them from the hides at Lagoon 2

In May, there should be around 2,000 water birds, plus birds in the mature woodland, thickets, shrubs, and meadows. You may see birds of prey including owls and hobby, garganey, oystercatcher, avocet, sanderling, water rail, sand martin, plovers, tern, warblers, whitethroat, wagtails, yellowhammer, tree sparrow, swift, swallow, nightingale, butterflies, moths, hare, weasel and stoat.

We intend going first to the Lyndon Visitor Centre, which is the area of the reserve where the ospreys nest. Here we will have an introductory talk then a guided tour to see the ospreys from a distance. Under two mile walk here.

Our coach will then transfer us to the Egleton Birdwatching Centre, which has the majority of hides and is the recommended area for general birdwatching. At least a five mile walk to visit all the hides here.

There are toilets at both visitor centres, a wildlife interests shop at Egelton, but no cafe at either centre.

NOTE - this coach trip does not go to the Birdfair, which is not until August. There may be a BOC coach trip.
