Weekday and Weekend Walks, and Weekend Coach Outings

Padworth Common 2019
Friday EVENING Walk

Date: Friday 14 June 2019 at 20:00

Details:

On a reasonably warm evening, which was an improvement on the previous three days of rain, ten people turned out from various groups in the area.

We walked round the plantation and saw three ravens and heard chiffchaff, goldcrest, song thrush and willow warbler.

Having walked until it was nearly dark, some of the group did see nightjar but only briefly. Everybody heard them but the plantation is getting too tall for good views.

We all saw woodcock flying over our heads along with the midges.

This is the last outdoor meeting this season so looking forward to next season.

Don’t forget to book your place on the coach trip to Finginghoe Wick and Abberton Reservoir on Saturday 14th September.

Evening outing to Padworth Common Local Nature Reserve and Wildlife Heritage Site, looking for nightjar and woodcock. Bring a torch and insect repellant.

The reserve has a network of paths and a variety of habitats including lowland heath, oak and pine woodlands, ponds and a wet alder woodland. The heathland has nightjar, tree pipit, stonechat, woodlark and the occasional Dartford warbler. Elsewhere - woodpeckers, siskin, goldcrest, treecreeper, woodcock, tawny owl, tits, finches. Our 2015 visit had good views of both nightjar and woodcock at around 10pm.

No facilities. Decent path to nightjar area, muddy paths through woods. Flat.
