Map of Moor Green Lakes Nature Reserve

Three former gravel pits were restored in 1993 with islands and scrapes to create the Moor Green Lakes nature reserve. More recent gravel workings to the west are to be added to the reserve. There are ash, willow, maple and hazel trees, scrub and grassland. The river Blackwater runs along the southern edge of the site.

There are bird feeders in the recently (Nov 2018) enlarged free car park, but no toilets or food. Two hides, two screens. A walk of up to four miles on footpaths, no steep slopes, mud probable.

Regular visitors include Canada, greylag, barnacle and Egyptian geese, wigeon, pochard, gadwall, teal, goosander, shoveler, goldeneye, tufted duck, coot, grebes, gulls, thrushes, nuthatch, reed bunting, stonechat, linnet, meadow pipit, finches and siskin. The barn owl can sometimes be seen in its box.

Less frequently seen are bittern, smew, little egret, snipe, water rail, green sandpiper, kingfisher, redpoll, goldcrest and brambling. We usually see around 40-50 species.
