EVENING OUTING to Penn Wood, Bucks

Penn Wood
Penn Woods
24/04/12 5.30pm
Although it was fairly muddy underfoot due to heavy rain the previous few days, the weather was very kind to us and we enjoyed an extremely pleasant stroll through the woods bathed in warm evening sunshine. The intention had been to view the Brambling roost but unfortunately they had all decided it was time to depart during the previous weeks, after the last hot spell! In past years in April there have always been good numbers of Brambling, Greenfinch and Chaffinch along the Rhododendron Walk, but despite this, the group managed to see a variety of woodland birds and visit parts of the wood that they hadn’t been to before. Green Woodpeckers remained elusive but several were heard and we had good views of Blue, Great, Coal and Long Tailed Tits, plus Jay, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Goldfinch, Nuthatch and Goldcrest. Hopefully we’ll have better luck next year.
