SATURDAY COACH TRIP
to RSPB Minsmere

Date: Saturday 5 September 2015 at 07:00

Details:

Thirty-five of us, including some new faces, rose early to make the journey to one of the group’s favourite destinations – RSPB Minsmere. From the coach, Kestrels and Buzzards were spotted as we made our way through sunshine and showers.

On arrival we were greeted by a member of the RSPB staff, who kindly handed out maps, weather forecast and information on recent sightings. Splitting into smaller groups, we set off in our differing directions – some to the coast, others around the woodlands.

A Redstart was an early highlight as she competed with Robins, some juvenile, for hunting rights!  A very smart Lesser Whitethroat was nearby, a Kestrel swooped low .. and many rabbits continued to feed….

Although the weather remained dry, the wind dashed hopes of viewing Bearded Tits and the reported Red-Backed Shrike was not in evidence either.  However, at least two of the group were lucky enough to see a Bittern. Scoter were viewed at sea.  Marsh Harrier, Stonechats and Wheatear were sighted as an acrobatic display was put on by the Swallows. Flocks of Greenfinches flew overhead.

The hides around the scrape gave good views of Avocet, Wigeon, Teal, Shelduck, Shoveler, Spotted Redshank, Common Sandpiper, Dunlin, Little Stint and of a Little Grebe giving an expert fishing demonstration.

On the feeders just outside the main doors to the visitor centre, Chaffinch, Great, Blue and Marsh Tits added to our list.

A highly enjoyable day at a great reserve.  We left at 4pm and returned to Braywick by 7:45pm

Thanks to Brian Reeve for leading the group.
