Reports, with Bird Lists, of our Meetings, Walks and Outings

WEEKEND AWAY
to Gibraltar Point Field Station

Date: Friday 16 October 2015 00:00 to Monday 19 October 2015 23:59

Details:

A group of 18 people, from Maidenhead and surrounding areas, travelled to Gibraltar Point this year. Most of the group met at The  Castle Inn in Freiston for lunch (very good with 5-6 different vegetables).

Some of the group had already visited Frampton Marshes RSPB reserve, where they had seen Marsh Harriers plus various waders.

After lunch we went to Freiston Shore RSPB where there were Wigeon in their thousands and Grey Plover, Golden Plover, Redshank, Spotted Redshank, Little Grebe, but no Slavonian Grebe. There were also Goldcrest , Meadow Pipit and Goldfinch in small flocks. We arrived at our hotel  in Skegness in time for an evening meal and a few drinks.

After breakfast Saturday morning, we made our way to Gibraltar Point where we split up into small groups and went our various ways. We saw a good variety of raptors including Merlin, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Peregrine and ringtail Hen Harrier. There was only one pair of Avocet (they seem to down in number each year). The other waders were Black-tailed Godwit, Greenshank and a Jack Snipe which was very difficult to see. A suspected Marsh Sandpiper was later identified as another Greenshank.  The group I was with heard a bird we could not identify, but using modern technology it turned out to be a Crossbill. There were also large numbers of Redwing, Fieldfare and Goldcrest coming in on migration.

We also went into the wooded area where there is a screen at the feeders and saw Brambling, Greenfinch, Chaffinch and a Great Spotted Woodpecker. The weather stayed dry but windy until about 5pm when we had a shower.

We returned to Gibraltar Point on Sunday and this time we headed for the coast, looking for more waders. We saw Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Redshank, Oystercatcher and in the distance, with some Herring Gulls, there was a Short-eared Owl. We also saw a female Sandy wader distinguished by green/grey plumage and pink feet. Confirmed sighting as a lifer by several group members but unfortunately no photographic evidence exists.

Walking back inland toward the Shoveler lake, we saw Kingfisher and Swallow and walked further in to see Twite and Stonechats.

When we walked back to lunch at the catering van, we saw large flocks of Golden Plover (500-800) but we never saw them land.

After a snack we had a distant view of  a Great Grey Shrike from the old Gibraltar Point centre.  Around the old centre there were also Redstart and some saw House Martin, which on October 18th is rather late in the season.

Monday morning had some sunshine so most of us had a last visit to Gibraltar Point, where a few were fortunate to see a rare Red-flanked Bluetail. Then it was time to set off home, many going via Freiston and/or Frampton.

The total different species seen by Friday night was 52, by Saturday night was 85, by Sunday night was 98, over the whole long weekend was 104.

It is good to see that the new visitor centre is now under construction and hopes to be open next year.

The hotel has been reserved for next year for 7th-9th October at £60 per night for bed, breakfast and evening meal.

Hope to see you next year.
