Stocker's Lake 2016
Sunday morning walk

Date: Sunday 17 April 2016 at 09:30

Details:

Sunday was sunny, as forecast.  Ten of us gathered in the Springwell Lane car park and at 9:30, we were off, ably led by Martin.  The path was in better condition than expected, not too muddy.  Inns Lake yielded the usual water birds, plus distant hirundines. At the bridge over the River Colne, we went south-east, to view Stocker's Lake from the south.

Trees along here had a pair of Treecreepers showing well and a Goldcrest.  The lake gave views of Common Terns along with a distant Goldeneye and an Oystercatcher.  Three Little Egrets were perched in the Heronry, where young Herons were visible in the nests.

Crossing the Grand Union Canal, we reached Stocker's Farm.  The resident House Sparrows were in every bush.  The main attractions here were the resident Little Owl, plus a Little Ringed Plover.  Overhead lines were providing perches for Swallows.

Heading north across the causeway, we failed to find the reported Lesser Spotted Woodpecker but did see Sedge, Willow and Cetti's warblers.  In the trees along the norther edge of the lake we found a Blackcap while the lake itself held a Red-breasted Pochard.

Back to the car park around 12:45, as it began to cloud over.

The total number of birds seen was 55, slightly more than previous visits.
