Reports, with Bird Lists, of our Meetings, Walks and Outings

WEEKEND AWAY
to Gibraltar Point NNR

Date: Friday 7 October 2016 13:00 to Monday 10 October 2016 14:00

Details:

We headed to Lincolnshire, for our usual migration, to see birds on their migration.

On the way some went to Grafham Water Park for coffee and a look in the hides to see Little Egrets, Cormorants, Teal, Shoveler, plus hundreds of Coots.

Some people called into Frampton Marshes RSPB hoping to see the Long-billed Dowitcher, Merlin and various other birds.

Then we all meet up at the Castle pub for lunch before going to Freiston Shore RSPB where we saw thousands of Wigeon, plus Tree Sparrows in the car park. No one saw any raptors except Kestrels and there were very few waders. On the way back to the car park, some saw the first Redwings and Ring Ouzel of the season.

Then we drove to the Crown hotel Skegness where we had a very good 3-course evening meal, and in the morning, a hearty breakfast.

Gibraltar Point has a new £1m visitor centre with a shop and café. The roof of the new building is an open viewing area, looking out over the salt marshes. The centre has been designed with large amounts of gratuitous glass, which will result in many bird casualties.

Our group of 16 people split into smaller groups, some going to the hides and some going to the coast.

Those that went to the hides saw various waders like Teal, Wigeon, Greenshank, Redshank, Spotted Redshank, Curlew Sandpiper and 20+ Avocet. There were Ring Ouzels in the trees by the path to the coast. After a sandwich in the cafe and the successful rescue of a glass-stunned Robin, we went towards the coast and were all surprised by how much of the coastline has been washed into the sea.

Having had a good day birding some went to a new drinking establishment across the road from the Hotel returning for the evening meal, which was again very good. All then gathered in the hotel bar to collate the day's sightings.

On Sunday lunchtime, some of our group went home, some went to Norfolk (where they saw the Yellow browsed warbler, although we never saw one at Gibraltar Point) and some stayed at Gibraltar Point to see more birds coming in. Brambling, Tree Sparrow, Pink-footed Geese and more Goldcrest. Common birds not seen were Great Crested Grebe and Pochard.

Sunday evening at the hotel, this time with a carvery main course, then a final cooked breakfast Monday morning. Some went to Gibraltar Point before setting off home, many travelling via Frampton Marshes again - every hopeful of seeing the Long-billed Dowitcher.

Over the weekend we saw a total of 112 bird species, 11 of which were additions to the group's year list.

I think everybody had a good weekend and will hopefully do the same in 2017.
