Reports, with Bird Lists, of our Meetings, Walks and Outings

SATURDAY MORNING WALK
at Tring Reservoirs

Date: Saturday 22 October 2016 at 09:30

Details:

We left Maidenhead in cloudy weather but when we arrived at the reservoirs it was foggy. This soon cleared and it turned out to a reasonable day.

When we arrived at Startopsend there were some people already looking for a Ring-necked Duck, which had been reported at Wilstone Reservoir the previous day. We walked around Marsworth, Tringford and Startopsend Reservoirs and saw various ducks, but not many waders.

Then the 16 people drove to Wilstone Reservoir, which is just a mile along the road. The Ring-necked Duck had been seen earlier in the morning, so after looking at every Tufted Duck, we eventually found it. This was good as most people had not seen one before.

Other birds that were seen included Red-crested Pochard, as well as the usual Wigeon, Teal, Pochard, Shoveler and Mallard. Most people also saw Water Rail, Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail and Golden Plover in the distance. The total number of bird species seen was 44, which was eight down on two years ago when we went in September.

After a good day birding we all retired to the pub for a well deserved drink and something to eat.

Startops End pay and display car park (£1.50 for three hours in 2015) gives us access to Startopsend, Tringford and Marsworth reservoirs, plus the Anglers Retreat pub and Bluebells tea rooms. Then a short drive can take us to the smaller, free, car park at Wilstone reservoir.

We might see some of Whooper Swan, Pintail, Red-crested Pochard, plover, godwit, sandpiper, Kingfisher.  Or wth luck Bittern, Garganey, Corn Bunting, Marsh Harrier, Hobby, Peregrine Falcon, snipe - this is one of the best birdwatching areas in the southeast.
