SATURDAY MORNING OUTING
to Stocker's Lake

Date: Saturday 25 February 2017 at 09:30

Details:

We arrived at Stocker's Lake car park in Springwell Lane to find it closed because of the wind from Storm Doris in the previous days.

There were only six cars to park so we managed to park in lay-bys in Springwell Lane. In the six cars we had 11 people, on a dry dull morning.

We hadn't gone far before we saw two Little Egrets in the stream that runs into the canal. Walking around the lakes we saw Pochard, Wigeon, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye and Shoveler. The best bird, with all its colour, was at least three pairs of Red-crested Pochard.

There were the normal Black-headed Gulls just coming into summer plumage. Herring Gulls and Lesser Black-backed Gulls as usual, making plenty of noise. There were a large number of Grey Heron, at least 20-25 birds nesting in the trees and standing on the banks of the lake.

We walked round the canal hoping to see the Little Owl which is generally in the tree in the field next to the canal, but no luck this year. Plenty of House Sparrows around the adjacent house in the ivy.

Walking on past the sailing club there was a pair of Great Crested Grebe doing their usual courtship dance, called 'Snaking'. A good sign that Spring is coming. There were very few smaller birds, no Siskins, Nuthatches or Tree Creepers but we had a very good view of Cetti's Warbler.

Again this year, we did not see any Goosander. They seem to have gone from Stockers Lake for some reason.

We all had a good morning bird watching seeing a total of 41 species.
