Otmoor RSPB Reserve 2017
Sunday morning walk

Date: Sunday 14 May 2017 at 09:30

Details:

We arrived at Otmoor on a dry overcast day having had much needed rain overnight after a very dry April.

The car park was full, probably due to the fact that many migrants had returned including the Turtle Doves, Cuckoo, Hobby and Warblers, but mainly because two Cranes were there.

We left the car park and walked along the track to hear Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler, Cuckoo and Goldfinch on the overhead wires. There was also a Brown Hare in the distance in the sheep field. We walked past the bird feeders where we saw Great Spotted Woodpecker, Chaffinch and Whitethroat.

Walking along the main track we spotted the Cranes in the distance, also Marsh Harriers and at least six Hobbies sitting on posts. Further on we heard Turtle Doves calling, then a pair flew over and later we saw one on a dead branch in an Oak Tree.

On the same path we heard Cetti's Warbler, Whitethroat, Swift, Common Tern and Sedge and Reed Warbler. At the hide we did see Redshank and Lapwing and some took a different route and saw Black-tailed Godwit and Oystercatcher.

Having left the hide we walked along a path to the viewing area by the wetland area and saw Tufted Duck, Wigeon, Pochard and Great Crested Grebe. As we left there some saw a Grasshopper Warbler but some only heard it.

Walking back to the car park we saw a Lesser Whitethroat, which sounds much like a Chaffinch.

Having arrived back at the car park we had seen 63 species and heard a further one. The 19 people had a very good day having seen most of the birds we wanted to see.
