Padworth Common 2017
Friday EVENING walk

Date: Friday 16 June 2017 at 20:00

On a very warm evening 13 people turned out, hoping to see a Nightjar.

We headed off from Silver Lane where we parked the cars towards the forest plantation in good light but too early to see the Nightjar.

On the main path we saw a Slow Worm which you don't very often see in the middle of a path.

We walked our usual route and heard Blackcaps, Willow Warblers and a Wren and we also saw three young Great Spotted Woodpeckers.

As we walked round there is a pond in the middle of the plantation where we usually see Coot, Moorhen and Mallard but there was nothing there except one Grey Heron, which flew off as soon as he saw us.

As we approached the place where we normally see the Nightjar there was another small group of people from Bucks bird club and asked if they had seen anything. A Woodcock had flown over just before we got there.

The first call of the Nightjar was about 9:50pm and it was seen perching on a large conifer "churning" for about ten minutes, so everybody had a good view.

Some of the group did see Woodcock flying over and most people heard them.

I think in total we saw four or five Nightjars "churning".

On the way back we also Glow Worms which was good.

We saw 14 bird species and heard 4.
