SATURDAY COACH TRIP to Titchwell Marsh RSPB Reserve, Norfolk

Date: Saturday 10 September 2011 at 07:00

Details:

COACH TRIP

Avocet seen at Titchwell Marsh RSPB Reserve

32 members and friends boarded the coach with armfuls of warm clothing, wellington boots and waterproofs as recommended by all weather forecasts.  The extreme weather, however, did not materialise and many of the party were able to birdwatch in shirtsleeves during a pleasantly warm and dry day with sunshine and a little breeze. Target birds were Little Bittern, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper and Little Stint.  We were met by a full scale twitch for the Little Bittern on the path some 100m from the Visitor Centre.  Restricted space did account for some unnecessary selfish jostling by birdwatchers and photographers alike.  The Buff-breasted Sandpiper could be seen in more comfort, however, from the new Parrinder Hides although some distance away. Also, Bearded Tit, was another welcome species.

At the beach, the tide was still well out, but a walk through very wet sand was worthwhile, with Eider, Ringed Plover, Curlew, Sanderling, Knot, Grey Plover (One male still in breeding plumage), Dunlin, Turnstone and Oyster Catcher viewed.

All target birds were seen with a group total of 83 species completing an excellent visit to this popular reserve.
